Detroit Dead Things?
Man, it has been a REALLY sad few weeks for Wings fans.
Free Agency has been a total bust. Zach Parise and Ryan Suter are now members of the Minnesota Wild after lengthy consideration.
Ken Holland let Hudler walk (Calgary, 4years X $4M) and replaced him with a familiar (and maybe unwanted, depending on who you ask) face in Mikael Samuelsson. (2years X $3M + NTC)
Holland also adressed a team need in a pest/fighter by signing Jordin Tootoo to a 3 year X $1.9M contract. Tootoo should be a useful player in agitating opponents and distracting them from being affective during play.
So, that is two right handed shots added to the roster, which is also a big need, as the Wings have sorely lacked right handed shots for years.
The defense is still in shambles, though. It looks like this, currently:
Kronwall - Ericsson
Quincey - White
Kindl - Smith
And Quincey isn't even signed! He has filed for arbitration. Ugh, Holland. Get Q signed and bring in another veteran presence. My hope would be Roszival on a 1 or 2 year deal, just to give us some depth and a little bit more reliability on the back end.
In net, Holland signed Jonas Gustavsson to a 2year X $1.5M deal, with an NTC. This is an obvious upgrade over Conklin/MacDonald. So now Howard can be much more rested down the stretch for playoffs, with Gustavsson likely getting 25 starts this coming year.
Overall, the Wings are looking at a total cultural shift. No longer will Lidstrom or Holmstrom be Wings, and we will look to younger players to step up and contribute in a big way. This year looks to be one of the worst in the last ~20 years. Smith and Nyquist will be leaned on heavily to fill holes in this roster.
Hopefully, with a healthy roster, our team will look like this:
Bertuzzi - Datsyuk - Filppula
Nyquist/Brunner - Zetterberg - Franzen
Samuelsson - Helm - Cleary
Miller - Abdelkader - Tootoo
ex. Mursak, Emmerton, Eaves (healthy?), Brunner/Nyquist (who will make the team?)
Kronwall - White
Ericsson - Smith
Quincey - Roszival (or other veteran D, hopefully)
Kindl
Howard
Gustavsson
MacDonald
Holland is rumored to be in the Rick Nash sweepstakes, so that could really add a boost to our offense. Rumored pieces to be going the other way: Filppula, Nyquist, Smith, a 1st round draft pick. Hopefully we can retain as much as possible, but Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson has been notorious in his asking price for Nash. Only time will tell us what Ken Holland does to make the Wings remain competitive this coming season.
Stay tuned, stay hopeful.
